The Columbia River has been a source of life since time immemorial, providing food, transportation and banks along which to gather. We can learn much about the people of the Columbia River Valley by examining what they left behind.
Dr. Kenneth Ames will discuss recent archaeological research along the Lower Columbia River, emphasizing the period between AD 1400 and 1850. He will focus on three archaeological sites: the Meier Site, near Scappoose, Oregon; the Cathlapotle site near Ridgefield, Washington; and the McGowan/Station Camp, across the Columbia River from Astoria.
Dr. Ames is the chair of the Department of Anthropology at Portland State University. His research focuses on societies of complex hunter-gatherers. Most of his research has been conducted on the Northwest Coast and the Intermontane Plateau.
These programs are generously funded in part by the Oregon Council for the Humanities. For more information please call 503-585-7012 or visit the Mission Mill website at http://www.missionmill.org
